Summer Cook Needed

We need a cook for a summer camp at the China Folk House Retreat, and we would prefer to provide an exclusively Chinese-styled diet.   We would like a cook who likes rural environments and wants to try something different and enjoys sharing their knowledge and work with young people.

 Here are some details:

  • ·      Our summer program will run for four weeks from June 13th to July 10th  2022.

  • ·      The camp is at 305 Friends Way, Harpers Ferry.  It can be seen on google maps. Our website address is: chinafolkhouse.org

  • ·      While the first two weeks are full, weeks three and four have not yet filled, but we anticipate we will also need help for those weeks.

  • ·      We think that with counsellors and staff, we will need to feed about 30 people each day for the first two weeks and probably closer to 15 to 20 for the second two weeks.

  • ·      Reliability is essential!

  • ·      We are willing to do the weekend cooking ourselves, or hire someone local, allowing our cook to have some time off.

  • ·      The cook should have a food manager certificate, and we would pay for that course if needed.

  • ·      I will have to run a background check on the person and they have to have to submit an w-9 with the IRS.

  • ·      We will provide lodging but the particulars are still being worked out.   Likely it will be a camp-style primitive arrangement and we are happy to show any interested candidates the options we are working on for their consideration. They could certainly live in our house in the beautiful town of harpers ferry if they were willing to drive the half hour each way each day.

  • ·      We hope to have our new commercial kitchen up and running for camp, but the timing is close.  We have reserved an existing commercial kitchen which is at the site of one of the lodges we will be using, one mile from the actual house.

  • ·      We have budgeted 25 dollars an hour for eight hours each day.

  • ·      We would assign students to help on a rotating basis to ease the cook’s burden and to learn about Chinese food .   We want the cook to feel part of the group.

  • ·      We have some large woks and steamers but would work to provide the particular equipment the cook desired to make their life easier.
