We are traveling in China until Thanksgiving 2024. For Winter tours and inquiries, please email chinafolkhouse@gmail.com

We accept scheduled group visits and overnight stays from March to May, and from July through November.

Please don’t hesitate to schedule a visit and stop by!

Scheduling Visits and Tours

When coming to the China Folk House Retreat, you can choose to visit the site unguided, or arrange a group tour. For either type of visit, please email us ahead of time at admin@chinafolkhouse.org and tell us when you would like to visit. For an unguided visit, you will simply arrive at the agreed upon time and explore the site at your own pace. Guided tours often require additional coordination, and if you are just one or two people it is easier to schedule on the weekends. On a tour we will lead you through a more detailed exploration of the House, including its history, cultural significance, and the efforts undergone to preserve and restore it in a new environment. Tea is also provided as part of the tour.

Donations

There are no strictly required fees for unguided visits and small group tours, but to help us keep the site free and open to the public, as well as further expand and develop it, we recommend a $20 donation per visitor.  Large groups require reservations and have more detailed fee structures including down payments to reserve a date.

Overnight Stays

We have several bunkhouses and tents on site, so school groups and other visitors are welcome to arrange overnight stays. Beds are provided, but guests will need to bring their own pillows, blankets, and towels. Food options are also available and discussed further down in a separate section. The normal price for overnight stays is $35 per person, with a minimum of 8 people per group. We also require a minimum stay of 2 nights, or that you pay a $200 fee to cover the required cleaning and sanitation checks before another group can stay.

We also offer a special 3 day package for school groups. The price is $140 per person per night, which includes 3 meals, lodging, and funding for programs and activities.

If you have any additional questions or want to begin planning your stay with us, please email admin@chinafolkhouse.org

Getting there

Our address: 305 Friends Way, Harpers Ferry, West VirginiaThe China Folk House Retreat is on a property called “Rolling Ridge Conservancy.” Once you turn on Mission Road, you will  travel down a long gravel road (1.5 miles) with some blind curves so please drive carefully!

Follow signs for “Niles Cabin” and the “China Folk House." Do NOT follow signs for "Retreat House." This is a different property!

There is a ford across a small creek. Small cars drive across this ford regularly. For perspective, Prius does fine, but a Mini Cooper may find it a bit rough. Large school buses will not fare well on our road. If you are in a large group, please come in no larger than a 28 passenger bus.

Note that cell service exists for most services here but does not work inside the Folk House (the walls are thick) and there is no WiFi. You may have difficulty with cell service in the Rolling Ridge Conservancy.

Parking

The Niles Cabin is next to the Folk House and you can park before you reach either site at the small fork that separates the paths to the cabin and the China Folk House.

What to Wear

Dress casually and comfortably with sensible walking shoes. If you are coming to help with construction work, please wear clothes that cover your arms and legs. Summer time is tick time at the China Folk House. To avoid getting bit, tuck your pants into your socks and do a thorough tick check at the end of the day.

The spaces are mostly open air and not heated although if it is cold, we will have an outdoor fire. If you like to hike, there are many trails long and short and you can access a trail map here.

Food

We have a fully stocked commercial kitchen at the House. You can choose to either rent the kitchen to cook meals yourself, or select dishes from our menu below to be prepared for your group when scheduling your visit. To make sure we can accommodate you, please tell us which dishes you want ahead of time while arranging your visit. Renting the kitchen costs $400 per day, with half of the cost paid as a deposit in advance. Prices for prepared meals are included in the menu below. There are no other food options in the immediate area so please pack your own food if you are staying for an extended period of time and will not be using the kitchen. Also, be sure to bring a water bottle!

If you have further questions, please reach out to admin@chinafolkhouse.org
